ABOUT DR. TOM RIGG, PH.D.
Dr. Tom Rigg is a licensed psychologist based in New York City. Dr. Rigg has been passionate about helping people since childhood. He focuses on using a person-centered approach to help clients live in line with their values and improve their relationships with themselves. Dr. Rigg approaches therapy with the belief that we all have the potential to grow into who we want to be and reach our goals. He strives to provide a warm and encouraging environment for clients from varying cultural, social, and gender identities to continue their healing journey and live a fuller life.
Dr. Rigg is dedicated to providing an environment where clients of all identities can be authentically themselves and acknowledges the importance of genuine self-expression for clients, both in the therapy space and throughout their lives. He believes in meeting people where they are and understanding the world from their perspective. He is committed to serving clients with marginalized identities and hopes to increase access to therapy for first-time clients who are uncertain about how therapy can help them. Dr. Rigg seeks to help clients effectively manage distressing symptoms and ultimately work towards lasting positive change in their lives, both in and outside of therapy.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
Thomas Rigg, Ph.D. earned his bachelor’s degrees and doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Iowa. He gained experience working in college counseling centers and community mental health centers during his program and learned how to integrate a variety of therapeutic approaches with clients. Dr. Rigg also worked in a women’s shelter for several years providing support and resources to victims of domestic violence. There, he gained a deeper understanding of how the intersection of our identities, power, and privilege shapes our worldview and experiences. During his doctoral program he conducted research on identity development and his thesis explored the impact that a client’s comfort expressing their culture to others had on their outcomes in therapy. He completed internship at George Mason University’s counseling center and finished his postdoctoral work at a private practice in New York City working with a wide range of adult clients.
Dr. Rigg’s specializes in person-centered therapy which allows him to work with clients from all backgrounds by acknowledging and incorporating their unique life experiences and positionality in the world for a one-size-fits-one approach. He also integrates other evidence-based approaches including ACT, CBT, and solution-focused techniques. He is experienced working with clients from diverse backgrounds, particularly clients navigating life transitions (e.g., adulting, career development, relationship challenges, and expatriate experience). He also frequently works with professionals struggling to navigate balancing the stress from their careers with their personal lives.
