ABOUT DR. TYLER TOLEDO, PH.D.
Dr. Tyler Toledo, a licensed clinical psychologist based in Nashville, Tennessee, employs a holistic approach that addresses clients’ biological, psychological, and social needs. His emphasis on evidence-based skills and tools is precisely tailored to individuals, with the goal of improving overall mental health & wellness. Being trained to approach mental health from a whole-health perspective, Dr. Toledo has specialized expertise in helping folks with chronic illness, chronic pain, histories of trauma, mood disorders, and experiencing major life transitions.
As a second-generation Filipino American raised in the South, Dr. Toledo seeks to honor the diverse worldviews, experiences, and identities that each client comes with and believes that clients are their own experts. He is committed to empowering client strengths to craft collaborative, individualized, and culturally responsive treatment plans. He strives to create a safe and non-judgmental space, fostering authenticity, flexibility, and open communication. Clients often find that working with Dr. Toledo means embarking on a collaborative, dynamic journey – celebrating hardships and successes, and navigating life’s challenges together for lasting change, even after treatment is completed.
In his free time, Dr. Toledo enjoys lindy hop with his wife, exercising, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with his cat & dog.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
Dr. Toledo obtained his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Auburn University. He went on to obtain a master’s degree and Ph.D. at the University of Tulsa, gaining valuable expertise in working with underserved populations for treatment of various mood disorders, substance use, chronic illness, and chronic pain. Dr. Toledo completed his internship at the University of Washington, School of Medicine, working in a level-1 trauma hospital before completing his post-doctoral training at University of Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Dr. Toledo has worked gain expertise in a variety of evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), narrative therapy, motivational interviewing (MI), mindfulness-based intervention (MBI), problem-solving therapy, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and trauma-focused therapy. Although he works with a variety of concerns, he feels especially passionate about disability, chronic illness, chronic pain, mood disorder, trauma, grief, substance use, and life transition.
Dr. Toledo has also published extensively on ethnic disparities in healthcare, the neuroscience of pain, and emotion regulation.
