About Dr. Joshua Owens, Ph.D.

Dr. Joshua Owens is a licensed clinical psychologist in the San Diego area who specializes in neuropsychology. His specialization influences his approach to therapy which draws on an understanding of how the brain and body affect thoughts, emotions, and behavior, while also considering the environmental, cultural, and structural factors that shape each client’s experiences. He integrates these perspectives to provide evidence-based care tailored to the whole person.

Dr. Owens views a strong therapeutic relationship as a driver of successful treatment. He strives to create a welcoming, collaborative environment where clients feel comfortable being their authentic selves. His approach centers on helping clients work toward meaningful goals, navigate challenges, and build lives that reflect their values.

His clinical specialties include cognitive rehabilitation and treatment of autonomic dysfunction following concussion. He also works with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, and insomnia, as well as the thought patterns and emotional responses that can influence the experience of chronic pain.

Outside of his life as a psychologist, Dr. Owens enjoys being active. Recently he has been particularly obsessed with beach volleyball, but he has a love for playing and watching most sports. In addition to physical activity, Dr. Owens enjoys reading fantasy books and watching sitcom TV shows.

Background & Experience​

Dr. Owens earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Psychology from Virginia Tech. He received his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with a concentration in neuropsychology, from the University of Florida. He completed his clinical internship at Emory University and postdoctoral fellowship at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, affiliated with the University of California San Diego.

Dr. Owens specializes in cognitive rehabilitation and the treatment of autonomic dysfunction, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. He has worked with clients across the lifespan and currently focuses on adults, from young adulthood through later life.
