Online Trauma and PTSD Therapy

Clinically reviewed by Karan Singh, Ph.D.

Trauma can come from a single event, like an accident, an assault, or a sudden loss, or from long-term experiences such as childhood neglect or an abusive relationship. Common signs include intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, feeling on edge, and feeling numb or disconnected.

Evidence-based trauma treatment

Our clinicians offer the trauma therapies with the strongest research support: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). All three are recommended for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in clinical practice guidelines from the American Psychological Association and from the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense (VA/DoD). Your clinician will help you choose the approach that fits you.

  • CPT: learning to examine and shift the beliefs that trauma left behind (such as blame or a sense that nowhere is safe), usually in about 12 sessions.
  • PE: gradually and safely revisiting the memory and the situations you’ve been avoiding, so they lose their hold.
  • EMDR: processing traumatic memories while doing guided bilateral eye movements or tapping.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills can help when emotions feel overwhelming.
