If you’ve wondered for years whether attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) explains your struggles with focus, organization, or follow-through, a careful evaluation can give you a clear answer. Psychological Healing offers adult ADHD evaluations by licensed psychologists over secure video. Our evaluations go beyond a quick online quiz. We look at your whole history, rule out other explanations, and give you practical recommendations you can act on.

Why a Thorough ADHD Evaluation Matters

Many things can look like ADHD: anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, thyroid issues, substance use, or simply an overloaded life. A brief screening can’t tell these apart. A comprehensive evaluation helps make sure that:

  • An ADHD diagnosis, if you receive one, is accurate and well documented
  • Other conditions that affect attention are identified and addressed
  • Your recommendations match your actual strengths and challenges

What the Evaluation Includes

Each evaluation is tailored to you, and it typically includes:

  1. Clinical interview. We discuss your current concerns, your childhood and school history, work, relationships, health, and mood. ADHD symptoms must begin in childhood, so this history is important.
  2. Standardized rating scales. You complete validated questionnaires about ADHD symptoms and related concerns.
  3. Input from others (when possible). With your permission, a partner, parent, or close friend may complete a short questionnaire. Old report cards can also be helpful.
  4. Screening for related conditions, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and sleep problems.
  5. Feedback session. We review the results with you, explain the diagnosis if one applies, and go over recommendations.
  6. Written summary that you can share with your doctor or prescriber.

The process usually takes a few appointments over a couple of weeks.

Can ADHD Be Evaluated Online?

Yes. Clinical interviews, rating scales, and feedback sessions work well by video. If something in your evaluation suggests in-person testing or another specialist would add value, we’ll tell you. Learn how our teletherapy works.

After Your Evaluation

Depending on your results, recommendations may include:

  • CBT for adult ADHD to build skills for focus, time management, and emotional regulation
  • Treatment for anxiety, depression, or other concerns identified
  • A referral to your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist to discuss medication. We do not prescribe medication, but your written summary can help your prescriber.
  • Practical strategies for work or school

Who We Evaluate

We evaluate adults who:

  • Suspect they’ve had ADHD since childhood but were never diagnosed
  • Were diagnosed as children and want an updated adult evaluation
  • Have been told they might have ADHD by a doctor, therapist, or family member
  • Want to understand whether attention problems come from ADHD or something else

Some of our clinicians also work with teens. Contact us to ask about availability.

Signs It May Be Time for an Evaluation

Consider an evaluation if you notice patterns like these, and they’ve been around since childhood:

  • Chronic trouble focusing, especially on tasks that don’t interest you
  • Frequent lateness, missed deadlines, or forgotten appointments
  • Losing things, or a sense that your life feels disorganized no matter how hard you try
  • Starting many projects but finishing few
  • Restlessness, impulsivity, or difficulty waiting
  • Underachieving compared with your abilities, or needing far more effort than others to keep up
  • Feedback from teachers, partners, or coworkers that sounds the same year after year

What to Bring

To make your evaluation as accurate as possible, it helps to gather:

  • Old report cards or teacher comments, if you have them
  • Any past evaluations, testing, or diagnoses
  • A list of current medications and supplements
  • Contact information for someone who knew you as a child or knows you well now, if they’re willing to complete a short questionnaire
  • Your insurance card

Don’t worry if you don’t have school records. Many adults don’t, and an evaluation can still be thorough.

ADHD Evaluation vs. Quick Online Screening

Quick online screeningComprehensive evaluation

A screening tool can be a helpful first step, but it can’t diagnose ADHD on its own.

Evaluations for Adults Who Mask

Many adults, especially women and high achievers, have learned to hide their difficulties through extra effort, anxiety-driven perfectionism, or elaborate workarounds. This “masking” can make ADHD harder to spot. Our evaluations look closely at how much effort it takes you to function, not just whether you’re getting by.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Any ADHD Evaluation

Whether you choose us or someone else, it’s reasonable to ask:

  • Is the evaluation done by a licensed psychologist or other qualified clinician?
  • Does it include a full history, not just a symptom checklist?
  • Will it screen for anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and other look-alikes?
  • Will I receive a written summary?
  • Is it covered by my insurance, and is prior authorization needed?

Our Approach

We aim to make the evaluation feel respectful and collaborative, not like a test you can fail. You’ll have room to share your story in your own words, ask questions throughout, and leave with a clear understanding of your results and options.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance plans cover diagnostic evaluations when they’re medically necessary, though some require prior authorization. We’ll check your benefits and explain any costs before you begin. We’re in-network with Aetna, Optum and UnitedHealthcare, Oscar (through the UnitedHealthcare network), Anthem and Carelon (through Headway), Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ambetter, and others.

We do not accept Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans.

Our clinicians are licensed across 20 states, and we have in-person offices throughout the US.
